Was excited now disappointed!

So I saw an add on Facebook for a local gym about doing insanity as a group. They stated it would cost $45.50 a month but it is 6 days a week. I was like ok I can do that. I kept reading and disappointment sets in.

You also have to pay an additional cost of $35.00 a month for the gym membership. So I commented so your saying in order to do this insanity program you have to pay $80.50 a month? In a nut shell their response was pretty much  yes but you get to also use all the gym equipment during the hours of 1pm-9pm(that's the only time they are open) The price is a lot but it helps people be successful when they do it as a group. Plus the DVD program is pricey. I said but what about the people that don't need the gym (my apartment has a full gym that is 24 hours) and I have the DVDs but I live in an upstairs apartment so I can't do them. So I would really like to do this group thing. Their response "we can't help you. sorry. good luck"

Don't get me wrong I wouldn't mind paying to do this.

My husband was laughing at me and making fun of me because I was getting flustered. Here is my reasoning:

1. Why are you charging more for the insanity than your own gym? $35 for the gym and $45.50 for the class. (they say the DVDs cost a lot) Which brings me to my next issue.

2. Why pay $80.50 a month to do it when you can get the DVDs for $90-100 (sometimes cheaper) and you can do it as long as you want?

3. Why would you want to use the rest of the gym when the insanity would be 6 days a week and that kicks your @$$ as is.

4. You know you are over charging if you say well we can't help you and delete my questions. I can't even find the post anymore.

I didn't mean for my questions to sound ugly when asking about why it was so much. I guess I could of worded it better.

That brings me to why I'm disappointed. I thought it was a great idea and would totally do it but I think it is over priced. This is an extremely small town and I do not see many people paying $80 for a class but good for them if they have a good turn out. I would of been all for paying the $45.50 and doing it but being forced to pay for a gym I would use is different. This town is nothing but miners the work 12 hour shift work. I do not know how they expect to get business if they are only open during those hours. The gym doesn't look like it has a lot of equipment. Maybe it's the city girl in me where I been to a 24 fitness and planet fitness. The gyms are fully stocked, you could go at anytime, and not have to pay extra for a class.

Let me know what your thoughts are? Am I just crazy or do you think $80.50 a month is a good deal?

  1. Hi Amanda.

I am on insanity right now and can tell it rocks my socks. It is freaking hard at the beginning but at this point I really want to finish it. No idea if I have lost anything (do not own a scale...yet but I have noticed by the bra's that my boobs went down, so something IS happening.

If I would get a chance to do the insanity in the gym.....I think I would go and jump on it. Yes it is very pricey BUT:

    1. IT is in the gym, with the people - you are truly motivated by the people.... it is not the same as doing the exercises my yourself.

    2. The exercises are 6 times a week so I can imagine 40 a month a class is an OK price

    3. There are people coming to it, so you get motivated by the fact that, well others will be there... plus the price kind of make you move out of the seat as well...

    4. You get to meat people that want to loose some weight too, chances are that you will start friendships and continue exercising with them even after the program is gone. - and that at least for me is worth GOLD.

    5. Did I say that excercising along with others will get you motivated to come in 6x a week and busting your butt more??

When we wereliving in Charlottesville, VA there is a gym ACAC I used to pay 100$ for membership. A month. That was THE BEST MONEY SPENT in my life. I had membership for two years and I was going to the gym 5x week. It was not not I had to...I really wanted to. I would give even 150 now to find the equivalent, the people leading the classes, fasntastic friends I met there.... Yes, it cost a lot, but I gained much more than just pricey tag and no commitment. I still compare everything to ACAC and darn it was unbelievable. :) So if it would be me - I would say GO FOR IT :) If that means stopping weight watchers, or dropping eating out once a week! If you really commint and come 6x a week (considering that the timing is right for you) go - if you will continue going to classes 6x a week for two months you will get into nice routine :D Plussome of the videos ar earound 38 min so you could stay afterwards for another 20 min and workout/talk to other people. Is it worth it? I really do think so.

    1. I totally agree with you. I have the DVDs and love it but stopped because I moved to an upstairs apartmens. As for the gym part it would be a waste of money because they are only open 1pm-9pm with litle amount of equipment. Also, my apartment provides a full gym that I have access 24 hours. I wanted to do it because of the group aspect but found paying $80.50 to do it was way too much since I wouldn't be able I utilize the gym.

    2. Then if you dont want to pay so much and already have the dvd....we can do it together....I am sure there is an app for that :) I do not have a gym in the apartment....but we do have a common cellar :) I would love to have someone to do it with...even though it would ony be virtually

  2. That's an outrageous price for them to charge, and it makes no sense for them to charge more for the group than the gym. You could start your own group for cheaper than that. Plus, the fact that there's a gym at your complex makes it even more nuts for you to pay that much a month.

  3. Insanity is great compared to absolutly nothing. Overall though it`s garbage! Youd be better off doing sprints in the lawn.

    1. Thank you for checking in on me! I actually will be starting insanity the beginning of September. This month has been crazy. We just got back from vacation for two weeks visiting family. We are building a house which we close on the 26th of this month, I started babysitting again, my son's birthday, son starts kindergarten, and my fall semester starts as well. I live in an upstairs apartment so I cannot do insanity until we get into our house. I should write and update blog. Thank you again.
